Scrapbooking has been around for hundreds of years.
- Scrapbooking started out as a way to compile letters, quotes, poems, drawings, etc. In the 16thcentury, it became like a modern day year book and was called a friendship album.
- In the 1970s, “scrapping” really took off thanks to Marielen Christensen. She had made 50 books by 1980 and they were displayed at the World Conference on Records. She and her husband wrote a how to book and opened a scrapbook supply store that is still in business.
- Nowadays, the scrapbooking industry is huge! It doubled in size between 2011 and 2005 and over 1600 companies create scrapbooking products. One reason this hobby is so popular, is due to the strong social network associated with it.
Scrappers, as they call themselves, get together at each other’s homes, stores, conventions, and often have scrapbooking retreats. Because technology has become so widespread, digital scrapbooking has become very popular and many scrapbooking forums have appeared where people around the world can share tips, lay outs, and other tricks they have learned.
One such example of this social network is the Fiskateers, crafting ambassadors. They started out as community for paper crafters and now they meet to share tips, tricks, and inspiration with their fellow Fiskateers. On their website, they share their tips, tricks, and inspirations as well as some how-to posts. They also show some lay outs that may be helpful.
Scrapping can be a great way to pass an afternoon and a great way to make friends.
Make your history and present and preserve it to show the world!
